Di Bucci & Son date back to 1960, when Amico “Mick” Di Bucco moved from Italy to Australia and embarked on a building career. He started off working as a tiler, concreter, and “anything else, really,” Greg recalls. “That’s how it was in Italy in those days – they used to be jacks of all trades.” In 1964, Mick moved into working with another building company, supervising small houses and additions. He built his first house on his own in 1969, making it his family home. He liked the experience, so he went on to become registered and form his own company. Greg estimates that their prices range all the way from $700,000 to $6 million, with an average value of $2 million. “We don’t do a lot of advertising,” Greg says. “Most of our work comes from clients who have built with us before, and come back when they’ve done well in their field and want to upgrade.” Greg credits that customer loyalty to the two key offerings of any building company – quality and service. At A. Di Bucci & Son, he says both offerings are unrivalled. “We’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Greg explains, describing their service. “Clients can ring us weekends, nights – it doesn’t make any difference to us, our phones are on all the time. They know that if they wake up after dreaming of something, they can pick up the phone and give us a call and that’s okay. It’s our business, it’s our life, and it’s what we do.” Then, when it comes to quality, Greg credits the company’s success to the expert team they have built up over the years. “We’ve developed a good group of guys who stick with us,” he says. “Our subcontractors are very loyal, and they do a fantastic job.” LOYALTY ALL AROUND A. We wouldn’t be there and they wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for the client.” BEING THE BEST A. At the 2013 MBA Awards, the company took home regional accolades for four contract homes, in categories ranging from $230,000 to $280,000, all the way to $1.5 million to $2 million. Di Bucci & Son’s award-winning streak to their desire to “always be the best.” “We work to our level of standards, not the clients,” he explains. “And the client’s expectation is generally less than ours. A lot of builders will do the opposite – if the client doesn’t complain, they’ll move on. It’s cheaper to do that, but it doesn’t give you the same satisfaction. We like to be able to go back to a house later, have a beer or a coffee with the owner, and know that everything

Di Bucci & Son has submitted every house they build for award consideration, simply because they feel every house has been worthy of it. Moving forward, Greg says they will continue to do that – as well as everything else that has made the company successful so far. “My father and I do the quoting, accounting, ordering, supervision, and everything else,” he explains. “That gives the client some assurance, and it means everything is done the way we want it. In the future, I don’t see that changing. If the wheel’s not broken, I’m not going to fix it.” “Every day we try to do the best we can,” he concludes. “At the end of the day, that’s good enough to win some awards, keep our guys happy, and keep the clients happy.
