DTM Construction Services | 3 ALL ABOUT S E R V I C E DTM Construction Services is a homebuilder that acts as a “one-stop-shop” for clients. From the very beginning of a project, they can design a home or renovation suited to a client’s land, budget and style. They take care of any planning or building applications that may be required, and they work closely with clients throughout the building process – making sure that they are getting what they want, every step of the way. “From the start of a project right to the completion stage, we take care of it all,” says Mel Williams, co-owner of the company. “And we do it all while focusing on the customers.” Dean Williams, Mel’s husband and the founder of the company, comes from a history in the construction industry that dates back generation. Growing up, both his father and his grandfather worked as builders, and Dean began his own career in the industry at the age of 15 – working as an apprentice for his family. Later, after many years working as a contractor for other builders, and then many more co-owning a business with his father, Dean decided to strike out on his own. He formed DTM Constructions in 2007 to continue the Williams family legacy of building in the Alpine Region. COMMITTED TO CUSTOMERS At the beginning of DTM’s life, many of the company’s clients came to themwith plans already in place. As the years have gone
4 | DTM Construction Services on, however, Dean and Mel have developed a strong reputation for design excellence, and clients have learned to come to themwith only ideas – and let them do the rest. “Rather than having to go and get your plans done at one place, and your energy rating somewhere else, and then your building somewhere else after that – you can just come to us and we do everything,” Mel says. “We try and offer a service that you’d get with a project builder, but while still being focused on the customer and everything they want.” Today, DTM Construction builds within a roughly 100 kilometre radius of Bright, Victoria. Their homes range in price from $350,000 and up, and their client base consists of mainly

DTM is set apart in that market bracket, Mel says, by their intense commitment to customer service. “We really do devote a lot of time to our customers,” she explains. “Most ofmy job is spending time with our clients. I help themwith the designs of every room, and walk them through the whole process so there’s never any confusion or nervousness. I make sure they know what they’re getting at all times.” That commitment has proven “very worthwhile,” she adds, as the vast majority of the company’s business is generated by referrals and repeat work. “If people feel like they’re important, and you’re valuing their business, you can’t help but form good relationships.” DTM Construction Services also forms strong relationships internally, with both their direct employees and their subcontractors. Mel says the company places a lot of value on what their team brings to the table, and they work hard to make them feel like they are an important part of the business. Strong relationships – with both customers and team members – have paid off for DTM with more than just strong word-of-mouth. They have also helped the company earn validation in the form of industry awards, like the regional HIA Award they won in 2012 for Best Renovation / Addition Project. For the winning project, the company added two bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room to an 1880s-era cottage. “From the start, we knew that project – if managed correctly, which it was – was going to Building a Winning Team Alpine Building Permits & Consultants congratulate Dean and Mel at DTM Constructions on their HIA awards and are proud to play an on-going role in their continued success. 6 | DTM Construction Services be award-winning,” Mel says. “It’s difficult to get heritage renovations or extensions off the ground in the area, but we came up with a good design and we were able to execute it well.” “I think a lot of other builders tend to shy away from those projects,” she explains. “They put them in the ‘too hard’ basket. That’s not something we do. We took that project on with both hands, really got into it, and it paid off.” According to Mel, DTM values that kind of industry award recognition extremely highly. “Once you’ve been judged against your peers and won, it makes people sit up and take notice,” she says. “The response we received locally, from trades and suppliers, was enormous – it was way more than what I anticipated.” TOP-OF-MIND BUILDERS DTM Constructions is a GreenSmart-accredited business, and they place a lot of value on constructing sustainable homes. Throughout a project, they try to offer clients as much advice as possible on energy-efficient designs and products. Their drive towards sustainability also helps
DTM Construction Services | 7 DTM stand out, because it often means reduced energy costs for the homeowner. “Sustainability is not even the way of the future – we’re already there,” Mel says. “All of our houses are designedwith green initiatives inmind. And because we do the designs and drafting ourselves, we can design for the particular block of land our clients have purchased, and make their home as energy-efficient as possible.” Moving forward, Mel says DTM’s focus on energy efficiency will grow – though their volume of work will not. In recent years, the company has completed between three to four new houses a year, along with two or three renovations. Dean and Mel are both happy with those figures. “We don’t want to lose perspective,” Mel explains. “The possibility for growth is there, but we don’t want it to come at the expense of customer service.” “What we do want to grow is our profile,” she concludes. “In two to five years, when people ask ‘Who do you want to build your house?’ – we want the first thing to come to their mind to be ‘DTM.’”
