E1 Group | 3 Mitchell has always had a passion for building, which he developed even before entering the industry more than 10 years ago. Before starting E1 Group, he grew that passion while working for several of the larger construction companies in Australia. When he established his own company three years ago, his goal was to harness his passion and use it to help customers realise their visions. Since then, E1 Group has evolved their capacity and refined their skillset with every passing year. Their capabilities now include: commercial construction; shop and office fitting; refurbishments, joinery and office furniture design, manufacture and installation; industrial buildings; residential buildings; build-
4 | E1 Group ing consultancy and project management. SMART BUILDING Today, E1 operates throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter, Central Coast and Northern Sydney regions. They are capable of undertaking projects ranging from all the way from minor refurbishments to major architectural construction – though the majority of their work is comprised of interior fitouts for commercial and retail properties. They also cater heavily to the education sector. In all their service markets, Mitchell says that E1 Group is set apart by their focus on exceeding client expectations. “We use what we call ‘Smart Building’ initiatives,” he explains. “That means that throughout all stages of each project – especially if it’s a design and construct job – we try to add value to the project, expedite constructions times, and reduce construction costs for the client. If we can find a better way to do something, then that’s how we’ll do it.” Mitchell says that E1 Group is capable of that kind of flexibility because of their size. Unlike their larger competitors, their management is streamlined and decisions can be made quickly. Mitchell himself aims to be personally involved in every step of every project. He likes to personally verify that their quality standards are being met, and that the client is kept happy. “Clients are who it’s all about,” he explains. “The majority of our work doesn’t come from advertising – it comes from word of mouth and

So forming those strong relationships is essential.We do that by delivering projects within the client’s restraints, and doing a quality job at the same time.” Another thing that sets E1 Group apart is the high calibre of their partners, Mitchell adds. Over the years, he has developed strong relationships with key local trades and suppliers – relationships which ensure the company can maintain competitive price points without compromising on quality. “While price is important, we ultimately select our trades based on attention to detail, innovation, craftsmanship and project commitment,” he says. “We also look at their history, and their performance on other projects.” “We also have great relationships with suppliers,” he adds. “We try and stick to the same local suppliers, so that when we need something in a hurry we can count on them to help make it happen.” In general, when E1 finds a partner that can deliver to their standards, they tend to stick with them for the long run. Mitchell says that many of their partners have been working with the company since the beginning of the Group, or not long after. GETTING IT RIGHT Over the last three years, E1 Group has already been involved in a number of significant projects in the region. Recently, for example, they completed a fitout for Laser Clinics Australia in Charlestown. “That was quite technical in terms of architecture and design,” Mitchell explains. “There were a lot of specific details we had to deliver. In the end, it turned out really good, and the client’s happy –
E1 Group | 7 which is the ultimate result.” “We try to exemplify our capabilities on every project,” he adds. “Because of my personal experience, and ours teams experience, we’ve been able to deliver a number of short-time-frame, technical jobs over the years. We always go the extra mile and put in the hours to make sure that happens.” Mitchell credits the success of E1 Group primarily to their dedication. He also says, however, that it’s important to have the right policies and procedures in place to back that up. “We complete quality assurance forms at all the critical stages of a project,” he explains. “We do that every step of the way. We don’t wait until the end of the project to see if there are any issues, and then try to resolve them then. We’re always on the lookout, so there are rarely more than a few minor things to rectify at the end – if there’s even that.” “We want to ensure a seamless handover to the client,” he adds. “We want them to be able to start operating as soon as they want.” Moving forward, Mitchell says that he wants E1 Group to maintain that level of dedication. He also wants to grow the business so that it can take on roughly 10 projects at a time – a size they are very close to achieving. At that level, Mitchell says he can still personally oversee every project and interact with every client. “I’ve worked with the bigger companies and seen what can go wrong when a project goes without the right leadership,” he says. “I want be a Managing Director, not just a Director that sits and watches the numbers come in and out. I want to be personally involved, and I want to make sure I can use my professional experience to make sure every project is done right.”
