Farnell Constructions Pty Ltd | 3 Based in Bunbury, Western Australia, Farnell Constructions is a local company with a dedication to building – building homes, building businesses, and building relationships. The company operates in a wide variety of markets, and have developed a reputation for satisfying customers in every one of them. “We consider the quality of every finished project to be of the highest importance,” says Felicity Farnell, Projects Administrator for the company. “We match that quality with our ability to work within timeframes, and a commitment to offering value for money. As a result, we consistently achieve a high level of client satisfaction.” Farnell Constructions first began in 1989, founded by Peter and Christine Farnell. Prior to striking out on his own, Peter spent more than two decades building a strong reputation in the local industry, working for other builders and managing significant sites. Peter’s son Damian followed in his footsteps, and comes from a similarly distinguished background in the industry. He spent 10 years working for large builders in many capacities –

Like his father, he has been involved in bringing a number of high profile projects to life throughout his career. Peter and Damian joined forces in 2008. In the intervening years, they have developed a company with a wide range of capabilities – including custom designed homes, large extensions, commercial projects, industrial units and sheds, and transportable homes and offices. They have also established an enviable track record within in the industry, which is reflected by their long list of customer testimonials and repeat works. PAYING ATTENTION Today, Farnell Constructions works entirely in Bunbury and the surrounding areas. The majority of their projects take place in the commercial and industrial fields, though they do venture across essentially all sectors depending on the demand in the market. No matter what type of project they take on, however, the company is set apart by their personalised service and attention to detail. Farnell Constructions makes it a point to never take on more work than they can handle, and both of their qualified Directors bring their expertise to bear on every job the company undertakes. “Clients know that we can give 100 per cent of our focus to their project, and we won’t be at the mercy of unrelated projects,” Felicity explains. Customers in all sectors really appreciate that level of attention, she says. Clients like the fact that both Peter and Damian are accessible at all times,

According to Felicity, the direct and personal contact between Peter, Damian and their clients has earned them a lot of positive feedback and repeat business. The vast majority of Farnell Constructions’ customers approach the company directly – either because they have built with them before or because they came strongly recommended from friends. “That’s always very nice to hear, and very validating,” Felicity says. “Wordof-mouth is the very best compliment.” “Bunbury’s a relatively small place, and it doesn’t take long for your reputation to spread,” she adds. “And our name is also the name of the business. So it’s important that we do the right thing by customers, because it’s our name and our reputation on the line. When people think of the name Farnell, we want them to have only positive thoughts.” INDUSTRY RECOGNISED Every member of Farnell Constructions’ team is dedicated to quality – a fact which has not gone unnoticed in the industry. As a business, they have earned numerous acknowledgements from the HIA and MBA. In 2010, for example, the company won a regional HIA award for Best Overall Renovation / Addition Project. Then, in 2011 and 2012, they won MBA accolades for Best Residential Alteration / Addition Project over $850,000 and under $100,000. On an individual level, Damian Farnell has also received the HIA WA Business Partner of the Year award. That accolade recognises the work of business partners in small-to-mediumsized companies, and was given to Damian in recognition for his excellence in everything from estimating and project management to office administration. “We value that very highly,” says Felicity of the recognition in general. “It’s a great honour

And for our clients, those awards underpin and reinforce every positive comment they might hear.” At the 2013 MBA Bankwest awards, the company received their most prestigious accolade yet – for Best New Builder. According to Felicity, a lot of the credit for that award goes to their team, which includes their roster of talented subcontractors. Farnell Constructions is a family business, and they like to make sure that family atmosphere extends to tradespeople and suppliers as well. Wherever possible, they also adopt a ‘Local First’ mentality, and hire Bunbury-based individuals and businesses. “We have very good personal relationships with everybody we work with,” Felicity says. “Peter andDamian have somuch history in the town, so those relationships have been built over many years and many situations. A building company is only as good as their subcontractors, and our subcontractors are some of the best in the industry.” SMALL AND STRONG At any given time, Farnell Constructions is working on one or two projects. Moving forward, they aim to grow a little – but while still remaining a small-to-medium sized business, and while still offering the clients the personalised attention that sets their brand apart. “We don’t want to become a mega company,” Felicity says. “Being small is our strength. We’re able to maintain personal relationships – with the clients, the designers and consultants, and the subcontractors.” “People really love it when the person who owns the company is actually building the building,” she concludes. “For Farnell Constructions, that’s always going to be the case.”
