The company first started in 1986, when founding couple Ken and Val Lamb took their young family and only a single Kenworth truck to the fledgling Olympic Dam community. At the time, the region was even more isolated then it is now. Times were tough, and the family had to live out of their caravan for two years before their transport business, Olympic Dam Transport, took off. He says that goes a long way to helping them stand out. “The mining industry is a tough game – there are no free rides,” he says. “The age of any business is a reflection of its success, so the fact we’ve made it for so long means we’re obviously doing something right.” The company also considers its relationships with its clients to among the best around. Darren highlights their pragmatic yet flexible approach in dealing with customers. “We pride ourselves on being honest and providing a constant fee, but we also like to question the status quo when it comes to the client’s needs,” he explains. “With every customer, we want to ascertain what the best, most cost-efficient way of doing the job is, and to provide that to the client so that we both save time and money.” According to Darren, ODT does not simply take that stance at the beginning of a project. Throughout the entire process, they are constantly looking for ways to boost efficiency and reduce costs.They want to create “win-win” relationships with all clients, on all contracts. “We don’t just tell the client what they want to hear,” Darren adds. “We tell themhow it is, and look for opportunities to improve our service and

Most of the company’s clients have worked with them multiple times – some of them have even been dealing with ODT for 15 to 20 years now. “We’re not big on marketing ourselves,” Darren explains. “A lot of our business is generated based on reputation and word of mouth. Ninety per cent of our success is based on our ability to provide a client with a service that they need. Our growth has been with the client – some of our contracts go as long as ten years or more. They also form strong ties with the communities they work within. “Community matters,” says Darren. “The roots of the directors and a lot of the families employed by this business are born and bred in rural areas. A lot of these towns out here would not survive if not for us looking out for each other. So there’s the utmost respect for community – it’s ingrained into our very culture here.” “There’s also the relationship with our employees,” he adds. “Given we’re a family business, we like to see it as being a bit more personal than a large corporate entity. We see our employees as individuals, not as numbers – we try to be flexible to their needs and in turn they generally offer that back to us in return. We build good relationships with them based on honesty and fairness, and our Directors are certainly not afraid to engage with the workforce, which goes a long way.” Moving forward, Darren says the company aims to continue fostering strong relationships with their workforce, their clients, and the community at large.
