A WINNING TEAM
2 | RW Stidwill With every project, RW Stidwill Constructions is a company that aims to set a new benchmark in building excellence. Their expert team builds with skill and versatility, and everyone at the company prides themselves on delivering exceptional results to clients. The company’s commitment to quality and client satisfaction has been evident ever since it was originally founded by Ryan Stidwill, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the building industry. Before striking out on his own, Ryan worked as a subcontractor for other builders. In that role, he learned the value of honesty, attention to detail, and the importance of a strong and unified team. When Ryan formed RW Stidwill Constructions in 2003, he sought out subcontractors and architects that shared his values. In the years since, he has shaped a loyal crew – all of whom “work as one,” and live up to his focus and dedication. “We’ve got the highest quality tradesmen available, at the most competitive rates you can get,” Ryan says. “We all work together to get the job done – us, the owner, the architect and the tradesman. You don’t win a game of football without a good team, and we have the best team on the market.” Through careful foresight and logistical coordination, the team at RW Stidwill is able to
RW Stidwill | 3 provide a building service that pays consideration to quality, time and cost. That ability is constantly rewarded in the form of customer testimonials, repeat business, and industry awards. SECOND IS LAST Today, RW Stidwill Constructions mainly works on the northern beaches of Sydney, servicing the peninsula and Pittwater area. If the job is “right,” however, Ryan says he’ll gladly seize opportunities to build homes throughout the rest of New South Wales. The company’s client base varies, as they apply their brand of building excellence to everything from new dwellings, to renovations, to boat sheds. “I just want to build for clients who want a really well-built custom product,” Ryan says. Though their capabilities are vast, RW Stidwill’s specialty is in architectural hardwood homes – where they use quality recycled hardwood and the finest building materials available to deliver a sustainable and environmentallysound result. The recycled timber, for example, is salvaged from demolitions of large buildings, bridges and has been allowed to season gradually over a long period of time. This results in a stable and sustainable building product, which is supplied to the company by their industry leading partners, including Australian Architectural Hardwoods,

Their highly skilled and qualified tradesmen can provide many environmentally responsible options. Sustainable building measures can include bio-friendly sewerage management systems, effective use of solar energy, and the capture and utilisation of rainwater. RW Stidwill also maintains close partnerships with associates such as de Soyres Malone Architects, who has an instinctive understanding of environmental issues and puts an emphasis on environmentally sustainable planning. “We love working with the architects and the owners to achieve an energy-efficient result,” Ryan says. In 2011, RW Stidwill’s commitment to environmentally responsible building was recognised by a ‘Sustainability in Design’ award from the Pittwater Council – a prize they also won in 2006, and which represents only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the company’s awards achievement In 2012, the company won the prestigious HIA New South Wales Home of the Year award for a Renovation & Addition project. The judges described the winning project as “artisan-like”
RW Stidwill | 5 rather than “tradesman-like,” and said it displayed an extraordinarily high level of detail and old school traditional building. They also called the timber and sandstone theme “breathtaking.” For that project, RWStidwill created their own special hardwood joinery using respected shipwright Michael Cardiff, a service they are capable of providing to all of their clients. Their team is passionate about working with timber, Ryan says, so the company has their own factory facilities to “ensure nothing less than perfection can be provided.” In 2012, RW Stidwill also won regional awards for Renovations and Additions Project of the Year, and Renovations and Additions Project Over $800,000. The previous year, they won two national HIA awards for Home of the Year and Custom Home of the Year, for a project on Scotland Island. “To be recognised in the industry by your peers for quality of workmanship is really nice,” Ryan says. “My whole team appreciates it. The awards aren’t just for me – they’re for everybody who works with us.” Ryan credits the company’s consistent award-winning success to the passion of his team. That passion, he says, fuels their hard work and attention to detail, which impresses the judges.
6 | RW Stidwill “Second is last – that’s how we look at it,” he says. “It’s not just a job for us. There’s only one way to do things and that’s the right way.” CONCENTRATING ON QUALITY The quality of RW Stidwill’s homes has not only earned the company the respect of HIA judges – it has also earned them the loyalty of clients. Over his many years in the industry, Ryan says he has formed many enduring relationships with the people he has worked for. Today, he estimates that all of RWStidwill’s work is either for a repeat client, or was generated by word-of-mouth. “I treat client’s money as if it’s my own, and offer a high level of communication,” he says. RW Stidwill’s high level of customer service starts at the beginning of the process, at the
RW Stidwill | 7 conceptual stage. At that time, the company can assist by offering designs from several of their associates. That depth of service continues well into the building process, where Ryan provides fortnightly budget reports and constantly keeps clients up to date on the status of the construction. Moving forward, Ryan says he wants to maintain his high level of personal service. The company is currently doing between two and three jobs a year, which is a volume he is happy with. If the company were to grow too big, too fast, he fears he would lose the personal touch that makes the company stand out. “I want to stay on the tools and concentrate on quality,” he says. “If I go any bigger I’d be hiring subcontractors and tradesman who I don’t know, and can’t trust to deliver what I want to deliver – which is a perfect home.”
