The government was very open to the idea, and a number of different Spanish cultures started to come together and contribute to our hostel. 10 | Residential Gardens Marta says that after first staring in her position as a Manager, she soon realised the company needed to grow and change to keep up with the evolving regulations in the healthcare sector. Since then, the company has worked extensively to upgrade and expand their facilities, all the way up to the modern day. Today, Residential Gardens has 84 residents total, all spread throughout their different buildings. Marta mentions that though their numerous residents have many different needs, they all share a common language. “That’s what we provide,” she says. “Specific care for Spanish-speakers.” Over the years, the company’s management has used their experience and expertise in business operation, investment strategies and training, to oversee the extension and the addition of more than 40 new beds. This growth has always been carefully planned and scheduled to meet both the short and long term needs of the community at Residential Gardens. According to Marta, an important part of the company’s expansion has involved improving their capacity to provide a service that lets residents “age in place.” This focus has enabled Residential Gardens to offer long term permanent accommodation. Other changes over the years have included paying more attention to the staff, Marta

Residential Gardens | 11 adds. According to her, having a caring and compassionate workforce is the most important thing in the aged care sector. A provider has to get that right above all else. “We have to make sure everyone is responsible and has a broad skill set, and we have to make sure we have people for every role that our residents need filled,” Marta says. “At Residential Gardens, we have managers, doctors, nurses, pediatricians, therapists, cooks, clearners, everything possible.” “That’s not all,” she adds. “I make personally sure to be a part of every group too, to join in the kitchen and set an example for everyone. We also make a point to hire a lot of younger staff – residential care, like a number of areas, doesn’t give many opportunities to the inexperienced. They get out of universities and no one opens the door. We want to give them that opportunity.” This work has not gone unnoticed. Recently, Residential Gardens won the Excellence inHuman Resources &Recruitment award in 2013 at the Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence (WSABE). Currently in their 24th year of success, theseWSABE awards were first established in 1991 and are given to small, medium and large businesses from across Sydney’s Greater West and beyond. The provide recognition to businesses that strive for excellence and have grown as a result of it.

Residential Gardens | 13 “It was amazing,” Marta says of the recognition. “We’re from another language, and even though some of us have been born in Australia, a lot also came from overseas. To be able to come here and get an award for our level of work is absolutely magnificent. It really shows the efforts of our staff and our efforts to train them.” Moving forward, Marta says Residential Gardens will continue to invest effort into training their staff. She also says the company will continue to improve, and build on the growth they have already achieved. “We want to grow, to maintain the current quality of life we give to our residents,” she says. “We want to care, to really care. We want our residents to see the difference compared to others.” “We want to continue to grow, but not while compromising on our commitment. We still need to be human, to be a family.” kilometre away, and the nearest shopping centres are inMount Druitt and Plumpton.
