2 | Select Civil Select Civil Pty Ltd is a civil contracting, plant hire and waste management services company operating in Unanderra, just one hour south of Sydney’s CBD. They have 35 years of industry experience, are dedicated to excellent customer relationships, and offer a wide variety of contracting services including civil projects, landfills, quarantine, and system management. The company was founded in 1976, operating in Kemba as a smalltime family-owned contracting business. It continued its private status under an original owner up until January 2001, when it was purchased by Groupe Poisson S.A., a major contracting provider that spanned most of France. They have been a subsidiary ever since, bringing French contracting products and resources to the Australian market. “I’ve spent eight years now working with Select Civil here in Australia,” says RenaudChauvet, the General Manager of Select Civil and a representative of their parent company. “When we first acquired the company we were looking for geographic diversification, putting our foot somewhere else other than Europe.” “Australia seemed like a fairly safe country to put capital in, as it had a lot of things needing building,” he continues.“So we identified tencandidate companies and settled on this one because it was doing the same activities that we were doing in Europe – planned dry and wet hire, civil contracting, and similar things.” EFFICIENCY MEETS STRENGTH “Our operation is multi-national,” says Chauvet. “We’re present in Victoria, specifically Melbourne, and we also have activities inNew South Wales. I suppose you could say the South Coast is

They also take part in theconstruction of bridges, roads and landfill infrastructure. Select Civilnot only excels in specialised civil work, but also boasts a hired fleet of largeearthmovers and associated machinery that allows theirskilled crews to tackle major earthworks. Additionally, their constant investment in their workshop capacity allows them to maintain a crew of nine experienced heavy plant mechanic fitters and three fully equipped workshops, which supply the mobile mechanical support their ever growing fleets need. In addition, their plant hire equipment can be seen on major infrastructure construction sites all over the state. Chauvet credits their success in that arena – and all arenas – to a variety of factors. Firstly, there’s the large quantity of resources the company can bring to bear from their European sponsors. “We have the efficiency of a small-to-medium sized business, but because of our backing we have the financial strength of a much bigger company,” Chauvet says. “When people entrust us with big contracts, they know we’re not going to fall apart – and they are still getting the efficiency and quality they want.” Another important factor, he adds, is the ex-

The resulting project was delivered on time, on budget and with no incidents. SITA NSW and Boral Victoria have also rewarded Select Civil’s industry commitment to quality by contracting them to perform landfill services in Kemps Creek, Lucas Heights, Port Stephens and Deer Park. As of May 2012, Select has entered under contract to Landfill more than 10,000,000 tons of waste over the next five years. Moving forward, the company has plans to branch out into a new sector of work – quarantine. “Because of our location,” says Peace,“we’re very close to Port Kembla, which is one of the main ports of entrance for bulk equipment and freighters on the eastern seaboard. It’s a very lucrative place to start looking into new work in that sector, so that will be another activity we’ll try and tackle.” “We’re looking into starting a quarantine facility, hopefully in the next six months,” he adds.“The quarantine wash bay is constructed, now it’s getting the necessary approvals from customs, but I have no reason to believe that with the facility we built, it won’t pass.”
