Managing Director Graham Searle has been a registered builder in the domestic and commercial construction industries since 1986, when he recognised the need to provide quality residential new homes to consumers in the Victorian and NSW marketplace. In recent years, Southern Vale Homes has seen success in the Bendigo area as a result of favourable interest rates, as well as an expansion into the booming metropolis of Sydney. “Over the past three years residentially, there have been ups and downs,” Graham says. “But I think with the low interest rate, it’s pretty positive. Our Bendigo area, for instance, has been going pretty well with low interest rates being a factor.” “We’ve opened up in Sydney since three

Our company is looking for growth through the Sydney area, and it’s going to be a very positive couple of years.” A number of factors set Southern Vale Homes apart from their competition in the home building industry. This is evident when you look at how the majority of their work is generated – through repeat business and word of mouth. “A lot of our work is referral-based, some of which even comes through our suppliers,” says Graham. “For instance, we have a lady in Melbourne that we’re into the third project for her, and at the same time we’re building investment homes for about five families that basically have heard of or know each other.” “The referral and repeat business is certainly a large percentage of our turnover,” he adds. It’s clear that developing longstanding relationships has been a top priority for Southern Vale Homes, a point which is proven by the company working with multiple generations of families on different projects. “We’ve actually built for parents of people years and years ago, and now we’re building for their children,” says Graham. To inspire repeat business, Southern Vale Homes puts an emphasis on quality. They also make sure they are responsive, resolvingany issues their client may encounter in a

We put a lot of work into our displays, making sure they’re quality built – and certainly that’s how we expect our houses to be built too. Clients visit our display homes and they see the kind of quality workmanship and attention to detail they can expect in their own home.” According to Graham, the secret to building such a strong reputation for quality all comes down to people. And a lot of our trades have been with us for 20 years. They know what we’re looking for, and we know their standards as well, so it all works hand in hand.” “As far as the staff is concerned, we have a sign up in our dining room that says: ‘We don’t train people to be nice, we employ nice people,’” he adds. “That is the crux of it. We just want that type of person working with us and for us, and that’s the culture that we’ve created here.” Over the next year, Southern Vale Homes hopes to continue expanding their work area and double their sales, according to Graham. “The vision at the moment is expansion through the Sydney and Hunter areas over the next 12 months,” he says.”We expect to double our turnover and return to reasonable profit.” While looking towards the long term future of Southern Vale Homes, Graham reaffirms that it truly all comes back to his philosophy that the people make the company.
