Sun Engineering | A record of SUCCESS Sun Engineering is a leading fabrication and construction company servicing the mining, power generation, petrochemical, processing, infrastructure and commercial industries throughout Australia. Since forming in 1975, the company has developed both the skills and the resources to deliver quality projects on time and on budget. “We’ve been around for a long time, and we know what we’re doing,” Chris Rodwell, Business Development & Marketing Coordinator for the company. “We’ve developed an amazing track record for quality and safety.”

Sun Engineering | TAKING PRIDE Sun Engineering was initially formed roughly 40 years ago by Chris’ grandfather and company founder Patrick McMonagle. Initially, the company serviced the power generation and mining industries in Queensland. In the years since, the company has steadily grown in size, reach and capacity, as well as expanded their client base. Today, they have a large portfolio of longstanding employees, have worked all throughout the country and abroad and own large fabrication, painting and construction facilities in Australia and China. They now have the ability to design, fabricate and construct a wide variety of projects in their target markets. Sun Engineering’s Australian facility is one of the largest capacity general fabrication shops in the region, and their Chinese facility is a well-equipped 22,000 square metre plant with European management. The company also owns a fleet of cranes that support their manufacturing and construction projects. According to Chris, that capacity is supported by a dedicated and skilled management team, as well as an equally dedicated and skilled roster of employees. He says the

Sun Engineering | majority of those team members have been with Sun Engineering for many years, and that continuity has given them “a far stronger management team than is normally found in our industry today.” Some staff members have been with Sun Engineering for as long as 35 years. Chris credits the employee longevity to the fact that they are a family company, and they have the family values that come with that distinction. “We treat our employees very well,” he says. “We don’t have that big corporation feeling. We recognise that everyone is a valuable member of the team and we all have our parts to play, and those parts all have a big impact on the success of the company.” Sun Engineering’s values and beliefs are handily encapsulated by their PRIDE statement, which breaks down to five guiding principles. The first is “Play it Straight,” which calls for creating an environment where open, honest and direct communication occurs. It means that they give and receive honest feedback, and they listen to that feedback carefully. Then there’s “Respect Builds Success,” which means respecting the individual talents, differences and strengths of every em-

He says that drive is another key reason the company has remained successful for so long. The ‘D’ in PRIDE comes from “Deliver to Win Together.” According to Chris, that means “Sun wins when our stakeholders win.” It means seeking “win/win outcomes,” and only delivering products and services that provide the best quality and value for customers and stakeholders. Finally, there’s “Expect the Best,” which means exactly what it sounds like. At Sun Engineering, they recruit and develop the best, and expect the best results across all operations. To ensure they deliver on their values, Sun Engineering takes a structured procedurebased approach to Operational Safety, Quality and Environmental activities. The elements of these processes are detailed within the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS) and are monitored and audited in detail to ensure world standard best practices are achieved. LOYAL AND LONGSTANDING

Sun Engineering | According to Chris, this proactive approach to quality and safety – and the outstanding record they have to back it up – is one of the company’s most attractive features to clients. Another attractive feature, he adds, is their size. They are a Tier 2 company that often plays on the Tier 1 stage, but they can act a lot faster – and provide a much more personal service – than their Tier 1 competitors. “We aim to work as a team to get the best outcome for both the customer and ourselves,” Chris explains. “As much as possible, we work together to either head off or solve problems.” Unlike most Tier 1 contractors, Sun Engineering also does the vast majority of their work in-house, with their own motivated and highly skilled people. That ability is bolstered by subsidiary companies such as PAN PROCESS and the recently acquired PowerGen. PAN PROCESS provides electrical, automation, process control and instrumentation services, and works alongside Sun Engineering on most of their projects, and

| Sun Engineering PowerGen is a full service provider for the power generation utility industry. Chris describes the company’s relationship with the subcontractors they do call on from outside the group in the same way he describes the company’s relationships with material suppliers and other allied companies – “loyal and longstanding.” “We’ve worked with probably a dozen specific suppliers practically exclusively for many years,” he says. “We have strong relationships with them because we know we can rely on them. They will provide us with quick turnaround times when we need a project done quickly.” Over the years, Sun Engineering has become a leader in the manufacture of materials handling and process equipment for the mining industry. As the mining boom in Australia has slowed, however, Chris says clients are looking to maximise the efficiency of their current mines over opening new ones. Sun Engineering is currently looking at using the practical knowhow and ability of their A GROWING BUSINESS

Sun Engineering | design teams to help them achieve that. Moving forward, Chris says Sun Engineering will also focus on other industries, such as construction in the commercial sector. Over their long history, the company has already undertaken several iconic projects in that sector, including the Tower of Terror Ride at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast – which was the tallest roller coaster in the southern hemisphere at the time of construction, and remains one of the top 10 fastest roller coasters in the world. In the near future, they hope to add to that portfolio by designing and fabricating the steel for more high-rises, shopping centres and warehouses. “We’re a growing business,” Chris says. “We’re looking to approach projects as a group, and keep providing maximum value for clients.”
