Obviously, when you’re building the same thing over and over again, it’s a lot easier.” Symmetric Homes, on the other hand, is willing to take on the challenge of customization. In order to give themselves an edge on their bigger competitors, they will let clients modify their existing plans or even work with them to come up with unique plans of their own. “We’ll do one-of-a-kind floorplans,” Derek says. “We don’t mind building using a plan that we’ll only use just the once and never build it again.” As Symmetric grows and increases their volume, they do see themselves using standard plans more frequently, as that will allow them to work faster and offer more standard pricing – but they still have no plans to leave custom building behind. “Custom is what we do at Symmetric,” Derek says. “We still want to do what we do, just maybe with an added price point.” On the topicof ‘price,’ Derek says that’s another of the company’s main points of difference. Even when charging extra for custom work, he believes their costs are highly competitive – especially considering the value of their homes. “Our price point is very sharp. Compared to the major builders, and even some of the smaller builders, we’re still in line or even a little bit under the line.
