JANUARY 2022 “I remember when I first joined the company; one of the first things they said was that they were wanted to donate brand new toys to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” he recalls. “So I went out and I bought probably about 200 to 300 dollars’ worth of toys. At the time, I didn’t really know who they were, so I thought that was probably what they meant.” “But then I realized that they had reachedout toall their suppliers, and they said that whatever they would donate, they would match it,” he continues. “So collectively, everyone donated about 40,000 dollars. Chris and Katya did what they said. They added about 40,000 dollars on top of that. So I wasn’t even close. They ended up sending a truckload of toys.” “That was the first impression I got,” Derek says. “That’s when I realized they were different. They meant it when they said they wanted to give back.” Every year, the company gives back in similar fashion, but they want to do more. They also want to build as many SDA dwellings as possible, so that more people with disabilities can have safer places to live and receive care. “We want to contribute in as many ways as we can,” Derek says. That’s one of the main reasons they want to grow at least a little bit more, Derek concludes – so they can give more back. To that end, their goal is to build between 300 and 400 homes per year. They believe at that size, they will have capacity to give back at a larger scale, but they won’t be so large that they lose their quality or dilute their value offering. “A lot of the time, when volume builders get too big, the quality drops off,” Derek says. “We don’t want that to happen to Symmetric Homes. We’re quite content to stay at the volume of 300 and 400 homes per year. That’s where we believe we’re at our best, and we’re right on track to get there.”
