Lyn designed the home personally. It was on a narrow block, which presented a number of challenges, particularly when it came to lighting. To maximize the lighting, Lyn designed the entry to be on the side of the house and made the front area a study instead of wasting it on an entry passage. She also designed a courtyard in the centre of the home for the light to come through, as otherwise the entry passage (on the side) would have been very dark. “When people enter that home, they walk in and they get a lot of natural light from the beautiful courtyard,” Lyn explains. “That was a key feature of the home. That really brought it to life.” According to Lyn, the client on that project was highly satisfied with the result. He was even more satisfied when, later on, the home sold for “a well-above market price.” Moving forward, CU Building Group’s goal is to continue building high quality – and ultimately, highly-profitable – projects like that one. Inspired by the award recognition that job received, they also want to continue submitting projects for industry awards, as those are encouraging to their staff and prove to everyone involved that they are doing the right things for their clients. As for growth, Lyn says they are not in any rush to get too much bigger. Both she and Max have been with larger companies in the past, and they didn’t like the compromises to quality and attention to detail that came with being too big. Right now, when it comes to their residential work, they are at a size they like and enjoy, where they can give each project the individual attention it deserves. On the commercial side of their business, meanwhile, Lyn does believe there is some room to grow. This year, she says the company is aiming to take on a few more large commercial projects. That’s currently a big emphasis of their team. The company’s biggest emphasis, however, is their reputation. When it comes to both residential and commercial clients, Lyn says the vision for CU Building Group is the same – they want to build a reputation as Perth’s “premier project management company.” APRIL 2023
