These days, Turner Plus specializes in architecturally designed homes in the $1-to-$2 million range. Most of their work takes place in Devonport but they will travel along the North West Coast to deliver their services. According to Phil, clients in that niche choose them because of their approach to relationship-building. “Generally, the largest spend someone is going to make in their lifetime is with a builder,” says Phil. “You have to reassure them through this volatile market that they’re making the right choice. Keep them informed. We welcome them to our sites frequently so their vision isn’t lost with our vision, and they’re personally connected to that process.” This approach leads to a lot of repeat business and referrals, Phil says. “When we first came to Tasmania we did a beautiful new build in Sheffield. That client has downsized and we’re building for them in Devonport now. It’s a privilege to build once, even more when that client entrusts you to build for them again. It says a lot about the client/ builder relationship. If you build that trust they don’t need to look elsewhere.” Just like they do with customers, Turner Plus also puts a lot of work into building strong relationships with their employees. Currently, they have a team of 15, which includes Phil’s son Aiden, who is moving into a project management role. “The industry is rife with people coming to a workplace who get trained, work for a short period, and take other opportunities,” says Phil. “It’s been a challenge to work with that.
