When he started 50 years ago, Bob Biernat sold water tanks to farmers. Now in their golden anniversary year, Bob’s company – now called Freedom Pools & Spas – is a leading swimming pool manufacturer, with three factories in Australia and one in Spain. “As a family owned and operated business, our reputation means everything and making our customers happy is at the heart of what we do,” says Bob. Bob, a mechanic by trade, first set up as a fibreglass tank maker in Country Western Australia in the town of Narrogin. That business quickly grew, and “soon we were installing pools for the farmers,” Bob recalls. Within 12 months, they had their own moulding facility. “After 10 years we moved the business to the city and we’ve never looked back.” Freedom Pools’ first pool factory was established in Perth then Adelaide. Following that, the company developed their largest factory in Queensland. “Business went really well, and 20 years ago we also established a factory in Spain to service European contracts,” says Bob. “Before that we were shipping product to Europe and costs got too high.” “Many people in Australia have a pool because it gets so hot here,” says Bob. “And we’ve had great successes in Europe. All the big suppliers there compliment us for lifting the bar over there in terms of quality manufacture. European standards for swimming pools were lax for a long time. Now suppliers are trying to make a better product. It’s good for the world.” Freedom Pools manufactures swimming pools using the highest quality eco-friendly fibreglass and gelcoats available.
