out into other markets. “We’re comfortable in the custom home building space,” says Alex. “I have taken on commercial projects over the years and I find the architecture of tilt panel concrete units unappealing and not something that excites me.” Alex has some advice to pass on to young builders starting out. “Talk to as many people as you can in the industry,” he says. “When I started, I worked very long hours and didn’t reach out to other people. Don’t be frightened to talk to other builders. There are excellent mentors and coaches available such as Kurt from Builders Coach.” “I’m also part of a mastermind group of contemporary builders. We do not consider ourselves competitors and prices are never discussed. Due to the nature of the industry, no one else understands us better than another builder. Being able to discuss our experiences in a safe place is invaluable.” JUNE 2024
