MARCH 2024 Aluminum expected to accelerate worldwide adoption of electric and self-driving vehicles Material takes on an ever-widening role in tomorrow’s vehicles For more than a decade, concerns about fuel efficiency have been encouraging OEMS to replace steel with aluminum on vehicle bodies, doors, trunks, hoods, bumpers, crash boxes, brakes, cables and wheels. With the advent of electric and autonomous vehicles, OEMs worldwide are discovering new uses for aluminum. The need for battery casings and heat exchangers in electric vehicles, combined with autonomous vehicles’ demands for high visibility and structural integrity, is expected to exponentially increase the use of sheet aluminum in tomorrow’s cars, trucks and buses. Supporting the transition to battery-powered vehicles Four major design challenges confront OEMs in their transition to electric vehicles. Extending vehicle range Improving battery and passenger safety Increasing passenger comfort Optimizing cooling systems for lithium-ion batteries The substitution of sheet aluminum for steel helps resolve OEM concerns. Industry INNOVATIONS
The Construction Source Australia The lighter the vehicle, the longer its range. According to Ducker Worldwide, aluminum is expected to contribute more than half of the anticipated vehicle mass reduction demanded by electric vehicles (EVs) to extend range. Ducker reports that in North America alone, aluminum content in EVs will increase to nearly 565 pounds (256 kilgrams) per vehicle by 2028. The larger the vehicle, the heavier the battery and casing required to optimize the EV’s range. It is the larger EVs, i.e., sedans, SUVs, taxis, trucks and buses, that will realize the greatest benefits from a steel-to-aluminum conversion. In the U.S., a vehicle’s gross weight determines which class of commercial driver’s license (CDL) will be required. Without lightweighting, some EVs could demand a higher-class license or additional endorsements due to the added weight of the battery. In older European cities like Brussels or London, some bridges and tunnels only allow vehicles up to 3.5 tons in weight, a target that is very difficult to meet for larger EVs without lightweighting. For heavier material transport EVs such as trucks, weight reduction enables an increased payload, providing a significant monetary benefit. Generally, the larger the vehicle, the higher the payback. Particularly relevant for larger human transport EVs such as buses and taxis, the weight reduction made possible through aluminum provides the added benefit of reduced CO2 emissions and improved air quality, of value not only to vehicle operators, but to the communities they serve. The thermal and anti-corrosion properties of aluminum make it ideal for battery frames. Sea-water resistant, highly formable, highly surfaced aluminum alloys provide the strength necessary to pass side-impact crashworthiness testing, protecting passengers and the battery should impact occur. Casing floor plates made out of aluminum are not only strong, but also capable of resisting corrosion related to weather exposure. These characteristics enable aluminum battery casings to resist weather-related deterioration and impact from road debris, minimizing the risk of related fires and further securing passenger safety. Optimizing battery and human safety Extending range Dispersing heat The batteries used in EVs produce energy while charging and decharging, requiring the use of heat exchangers to dissipate heat. But the types of heat exchangers used in vehicle air conditioning systems are inadequate to meet this new challenge. Aluminum clad brazing (which connects multiple layers of aluminum together to disperse heat) requires heating in a controlled atmosphere (e.g., a vacuum) to achieve optimum joining. Aluminum heat exchangers designed specifically to meet the challenges presented by electric vehicles can use as many as five types of aluminum sandwiched together, with the layers providing gradient properties to optimize cooling. These specialized processes and materials address OEM concerns, ensuring adequate dissipation of the heat generated by battery-powered vehicles. An experienced aluminum processing partner can help OEMs specify the right process and alloys to meet specific vehicle temperature thresholds, ideally working side by side with OEM engineers early in the design process to maximize the performance of electric vehicles. IT IS THE LARGER EVS, I.E, SEDANS, SUVS, TAXIS, TRUCKS AND BUSES, THAT WILL REALIZE THE GREATEST BENEFITS FROM A STEEL -TO-ALUMINUM CONVERSION .
MARCH 2024 The luxury sedan market will likely be the first to transition to self-driving electric vehicles. Passenger comfort and safety, and an expansive view of the surrounding environment, are expected to be top priorities for this market. The hefty B pillars used in conventional vehicles to meet structural requirements for crashworthiness are undesirable in a self-driving scenario. To enable large windows and an unobstructed view without sacrificing passenger safety, lightweight aluminum will be the strong material of choice. Supporting the eventual transition to autonomous vehicles In addition to the design challenges presented by EVs, society’s demand for sustainable solutions will likely continue to be a driver in the transition to aluminum-lightweighted vehicles. A Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen (fka) study, using a Volkswagen Golf as its reference vehicle, determined that an electric aluminum-based vehicle could meet the same safety standards as its steelbased equivalent, while emitting 1.5 tons less greenhouse gases over its lifecycle, taking into consideration production, a total driving distance of more than 93,000 miles (150,000 kilometers) and eventual recycling. Ongoing environmental concerns Conclusion Aluminum alloys are ideally suited to the design challenges presented by electric and autonomous vehicles. By aligning with aluminum partners deeply experienced in developing processes and alloys to meet demanding performance requirements, transportation vehicle OEMs are accelerating the pace of EV and self-driving vehicle adoption throughout North America. .

Brings Innovation and Inspiration to the Australian Commercial Property and Fit-Out Industry
MARCH 2024
Spaceful is an award-winning company specializing in expert office fit outs and inspiring workplace design. With headquarters in Sydney, they have earned a reputation for being agile and responsive with an innovative mindset as they transform the spaces where and how people work. “We solve workplace challenges. We engage with them very early,” states Ben Myhill, Spaceful Director and CEO. “We have experts in every aspect of the business to help the client right from the start to the finish of their workplace journey. “We manage everything from planning and property to design, fit-out, and maintenance. We bring all of those aspects together. This unifies the whole traditional methodology of workplace into one streamlined process.” Spaceful traces its roots back to a company in the construction industry started by Ben’s father, John Myhill in Cumbria. Along the way, the focus shifted specifically to workplace. Today, Ben and his brother, Brett Myhill, are running the family business that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Recently, Spaceful underwent a major rebranding. Ben explains how this helps the company better serve clients by giving them the outcome they desire. “We actually revolutionized our whole business model and rebranded in 2019 to offer a better model for our clients and to provide far better value,” he says. “We created a model that would help clients through every stage of our journey; they have a single point of contact right through the whole process so that it’s a very seamless experience for them.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Spaceful works with some of Australia’s biggest and best-known brands and this high-profile work is generating interest – and acclaim – within the industry. Their Temple & Webster project is a two-time Better Future award recipient having won gold in the 2023 Sydney Design Awards competition and silver in the 2024 Australian Design Awards contest. Their winning work involved creating an expansive national headquarters for the online retailer of furniture and housewares. “We outfitted their head office in Sydney which is close to 6000 square meters,” Ben explains. “That was a very significant project.” “They have quite a unique culture and brand. They wanted a space that would help them attract their staff back to the office. It’s a very progressive design,” Ben says. High-Profile Clients MARCH 2024
The Law Council of Australia is also of special note. This project, and another for a legal organization, Bartier Perry, made it into the shortlist for the Australian Design Award’s 2024 competition. “We had the privilege of fitting out their headquarters as well which was quite a high-end fit-out and had a really good outcome,” Ben says. “The finished product is very corporate. It really embodies what the Law Council is as an organization. All the finishes and fittings are very refined. It just makes for a beautiful aesthetic.” An exciting project on the horizon for Spaceful is fitting out the North Sydney headquarters for Pacific National, Australia’s largest rail freight operator. Ben says this will be another flagship project for the company. Looking at their clients in general, Ben points out that although they are headquartered in Sydney, they have a national delivery capability and a national footprint. THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
While Spaceful is winning awards for the workplaces they create, the company is also being recognized for creating a positive environment for their own team to call home. The company has been certified as a Great Place to Work for two years running: February 2023-February 2024 and February 2024-February 2025. In 2023 the organization was recognized as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces by Great Place to Work. Corporate Vision spotlighted Spaceful with one of its HR & Employment Awards when it tapped the company with the 2024 Most Supportive Company Culture Sydney Award. “That tells you that our culture is strong and that we have a really good team,” Ben says. “We have a very inclusive, collaborative culture.” “We have lots of banter, we A Great Place to Work MARCH 2024
have lots of fun in the office, but we also look out for each other and care for each other as well.” One important way the company is focusing on employee well-being is through membership in Mates in Construction. “Mental health is a big thing, especially in the construction industry,” Ben says. “We run workshops and whatnot to make sure there’s awareness across our company as to the risks in that area.” “There’s also a very high level of trust in our team,” Ben continues. “As well as that, we have a very flat structure. We don’t have a very stiff and starchy hierarchy. All the owners of the company and those on the management team are very approachable.” He goes on to explain that each employee is part of the team. “Everyone is crucial, everyone is listened to. There’s no one who’s a non-entity. They’re all crucial parts of a highly effective operation. He says that contributes to Spaceful being a very highly effective operation. It doesn’t matter if you’re very senior and experienced or you’re someone who’s just coming out of university, everyone’s voice is heard. Another perk, which would be expected in their line of work, is that they provide a great setting in which to do business. “And, on top of that, our office spaces are worldclass offices, so they’re nice places for our staff to come to each day,” Ben says. Along with a solid corporate culture for their in-house team, Spaceful has also built strong relationships with their roster of trades and suppliers. “Obviously, supply chain is crucial for our business,” he says. THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
MARCH 2024
Spaceful has earned Climate Active certification for the past two years. “A lot of work goes into maintaining our certification for that,” Ben says. “In addition, we’ve embarked on a net zero strategy, so we’ll be net zero by 2050.” “We have to do an audit each year of our overall carbon footprint. We have to monitor how much carbon is being used right down to how much waste goes into the landfill from our offices and what sort of power we are using.” He says they employ ways to offset any airline flights they take. They also encourage walking or using public transportation as opposed to using personal vehicles to get to work. Focus on Sustainability THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Ben outlines several significant goals as he anticipates the company’s future. These plans call for growth and expansion for Spaceful with an eye on national and global initiatives. “This year, part of our strategy is to start to network globally. A lot of our clients are global clients, so we’ll start to network locations with them and see where it takes us. In the next five years, we’ll strengthen our national presence, and we’ll continue to position ourselves as the provider of choice for the workplace.” Future MARCH 2024

B & K Revegetation and Landscaping is an industry leader in commercial landscape construction, revegetation, bush regeneration, and mine site rehabilitation. For more than 40 years, the company has served the mining, transport, industrial, housing, and government sectors in New South Wales. Michael Thurston, who is associated with the business through his work as Construction Manager at B & K Developments, says the company’s family atmosphere, high-quality work, and emphasis on client relationships make it a great place to work and do business. “It’s a family run business with a strong family culture throughout all the employees. There’s a strong commitment to employee wellbeing. It’s like one big family,” he says. The same family values that were around when the company was started guide the business today. When the company’s founders, Brendan Nebauer and his wife, Kathie, started their venture, they provided landscaping services to private clients equipped with only a mini moke, a 6x4 box trailer, and a set of hand tools. Since 1983, their business has grown to become one of Australia’s leaders in commercial landscaping and revegetation. Today, they have three strategically placed branches across NSW, servicing from Eden on the NSW South Coast to Tweed Heads on the NSW North Coast, and all the way out West to Broken Hill NSW. Michael has been a licensed builder since 1987 and began contract building under his own license that year. He became associated with B & K thanks to his reputation as an award-winning builder of high-end custom residential properties across the Central Coast. He became part of the B & K family when his daughter married one of Brendan and Kathie’s sons. The four Nebauer sons are all involved in the business with two of them, Ben and James, serving as general managers. B & K Developments NSW is a division of B & K Revegetation and Landscaping. THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
B & K offers a range of capabilities including hydromulching, mine site rehabilitation, landscape maintenance, soil management, and facility dust suppression. The company has had great success delivering these services on some of NSW’s largest key infrastructure projects in the mining, transport, industrial, housing, and government sectors. Their revegetation and vegetation maintenance at Western Sydney International Airport has received industry recognition. For this project B & K received The Sustainable Contractor Award, and the World Quality Week – Quality Principals, and Reward & Recognition Certificate of Achievement. B & K Developments has received its share of industry awards as well. With a highly qualified and experienced team of builders, carpenters, and subcontractors, the company is known for delivering high quality projects with exceptional attention to detail. They are a 2018 Master Builders Awards recipient for their Erina Heights custom home and a 2019 winner for their Brush Road project. Their Saratoga Project, which is an architectural build, has been showcased in Hunter and Coastal Lifestyle Magazine. This large-scale alteration and addition transformed a 70s style into a luxurious residence with views over Brisbane Water. Client testimonials on the company website further point out B & K’s award-winning work and how clients are impressed with the building process and the finished product while attesting to the company’s excellence and professionalism. Extensive Product Line MARCH 2024
While B & K has grown as a business in regard to the scope, number, and size of the products they offer, the company has also witnessed an increase in staff with their team more than doubling. Michael says that in 2015 the company had 40 or so employees; today, that number has risen to over 100. Longevity of service is rooted in the company culture with a number of long-term employees on the staff. “We have a lot of employees with 10-plus years of service,” Michael says. In addition to their special commitment to employee wellbeing, B & K also has a strong focus on safety. These factors – along with time to have fun and relax together away from the job – help with employee satisfaction. “We have a lot of social events throughout the year,” Michael explains. “We recently had our Favorable Corporate Culture THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
B & K barbeque for RUOK Day where everyone donated what they could. We double what they put in and give out prizes.” The company’s relationship with subcontractors and suppliers also tend to be strong and longlasting. For example, B & K has been working for many years with Bunnings Trade, one of Australia’s leading suppliers to builders and tradespeople and other industry stakeholders. With Trade Centres in every state and territory, they can provide clients with rapid estimating and quoting services from an experienced and knowledgeable local team, no matter where they are. The wide range of their products is also unrivalled, and the reliability of their supply and delivery is unmatched. Michael says relationships with companies like Bunnings Trade are an important factor to the successful delivery of projects in a timely manner. “We have developed a longstanding relationship with our subcontractors and suppliers. We basically use the same subcontractors continually. We know how each other operates in relation to the specifics of each job,” he says. “We are serviced very well by our suppliers with their ability to source materials. It makes my job a lot easier.” MARCH 2024

B & K – both the landscaping/ revegetation and developments sides of the enterprise – are committed to sustainability as they go about doing business. Michael says they have gone paperless and recycle where they can, including onsite. “We’ve introduced a lot of technology into our fleet of trucks to help eliminate emissions and to ensure compliance with Heavy Vehicle National Laws and Regulations. We have our own workshop and mechanics available to keep the fleet well maintained. We try and source materials as green as we can.” B & K is known as a leader and an innovator in sustainability practices in their revegetation work across a variety of sectors from construction and development to the mining industry. ecosystems, and minimize erosion and environmental impact. Michael says B & K’s goals and aspirations for the future are tied to their proven track record and their original and long-standing commitment to family values. “We act with integrity. Our reputation speaks for itself. We do what we say we’re going to do.” This dedication to quality and high standards leads to customer satisfaction with clients sharing their positive experiences with potential clients and even coming back as repeat customers themselves. Michael says that the building side of the business has seen repeat customers since 2016 when their momentum started to pick up. While he indicates that B & K would welcome growth, he goes on to say that they want to stay focused on providing their customers with the personal attention that they value in their relationships. “We always have been and would like to continue to be the builder of choice,” he says. “Basically, that’s how we pick up our work through recommendations and word of mouth. We would like to see some growth but not to the point where we would lose our personal touch.” MARCH 2024

Leads the Way in Sydney’s Specialized Passive Fire Protection Service
MARCH 2024
Greyton, Pty. Ltd. is a leader in the area of passive fire protection, providing a specialist service to the building industry. Backed by 30 years of experience, the company enjoys an excellent reputation and has built up a high-profile clientele across New South Wales. “We are leaders in our small niche in the market and although we are a small business, we are dealing with all the major infrastructure and commercial clients, even international conglomerates that are building all these tunnels and bridges,” states Nigel Thomas, Greyton’s founder, owner, and director. “We do a lot of their work, and we are the preferred tender for them. We punch a little bit above our weight.” Nigel goes on to explain more about the specialized service that the company provides and give a definition of passive fire protection. “It’s a specialist field in the building industry which involves adding fire protection to buildings including structural elements and also preventing fire from passing through fire rated barriers using proprietary products and prototypes which have been tested in the market. We use those systems to prevent fire and smoke from passing through buildings as well as damaging the structure which results in buildings collapsing or partially collapsing.” Greyton was incorporated in August 1994. Nigel started the company “very small” with only two directors and today, it has grown to a team of 25 employees. THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
“Between 1994 and now it developed slowly on a linear curve,” Nigel says. “We more or less ramped up when Michael (Gill) joined us in 2018. He was appointed general manager in 2022. Shortly after that Yusuf (Sula) joined us and he has just recently been elected as our operations manager. “Now, we have a very good management team. This is our top management structure – myself, Michael, and Yusuf.” Nigel was born in South Africa and grew up in Cape Town. He decided to call his new company Greyton, as a nod to the small town in the Cape region of South Africa where he spent time as a youngster. MARCH 2024
The company has compiled an impressive list of projects through the years. They have worked with major building companies like Lendlease, Multiplex and John Holland. They are especially proud of their work on the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney International Airport, the W Hotel, and the IMAX Theatre in Sydney – all of which are considered recognizable projects internationally. They have also been involved in extensive tunneling projects completing five in the last five years and have secured their largest project to date which is in luxury retail. Greyton’s leadership credits their success with these large projects to the depth of experience of their team, the strong relationships they’ve built within the industry, and the solid reputation they’ve maintained over the last 30 years. “That’s amplified through the way you can see the level of respect the company has earned in the industry through building certifiers,” Yusuf points out. “They trust the company and the brand where they would recommend that our clients use trusted brands like Greyton. “That also shows the hard work that’s been put in during the last 30 years and the quality that this company has demonstrated,” he says. Impressive Portfolio of Projects THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Greyton has a strong employee culture in terms of growth and education that extends to their subcontractors as well. This is indictive of how the company values their employees and strives to train and equip them to acquire the skills necessary to provide their unique specialty service. “We have a couple of subcontractors that we prefer working with and we are even interested in training them in our trade so that they have the skills that they need to do the work for us,” Michael explains. “Passive fire is very unique in that it’s one of the very few trades that has no formal qualifications or apprenticeships. We do a lot of in-house training with our own staff and our subcontractors to basically show them what needs to be done.” “Two of our best fire sprayers and appliers have recently been promoted to management Unique Specialty Service MARCH 2024
positions. So, we have project managers and supervisors which are experts in what we do and are also able to train the guys onsite. That within the last couple years has been very advantageous.” Greyton is an innovator when it comes to training their employees and subcontractors in the passive fire protection trade. As Michael explains, they’ve had to forge their own path forward, but this has allowed them to build their team from within their own ranks. “This has stemmed from the fact that there is no formal qualification and we’ve had to find our own way, our own path forward and our own way to train people,” he says. “It has created a culture where we really do promote our staff. They enjoy growth in their own positions, moving up from being a laborer to a skilled applicator, to potentially team leader, supervisor and even some staff now project managers as well.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
MARCH 2024
With all of the work that they currently have in New South Wales, Greyton doesn’t consider expanding their geographic reach a priority. “It has been so busy in New South Wales that we haven’t needed to expand,” Nigel explains. “We’re based in Sydney, but we do regional work within New South Wales which is our state. We really haven’t had to move into other states.” But, if they do branch out, Brisbane and Melbourne are on their radar as well as adding some tunnel projects. However, finetuning their efficiencies to enhance growth is the focus. “We have been invited lately back up to some of the tunnels’ infrastructure work that we have done. We have been invited to tender some large tunnel projects up in Brisbane at the moment, too,” Michael says. Future THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
“So, we are thinking possibly in the short term we might start looking at expanding interstate whether that’s Brisbane and Melbourne, but we tend to try and grow organically. If the opportunities arise, we’re probably going to start teasing those, but for now Sydney keeps us busy.” “Usef and I are looking more at the operational side of the business and the details of running it. We are looking at growth less in terms of numbers or staff and more in terms of efficiency in what we’re doing and how we manage the operation, looking at our office procedures. things like estimating and costing,” Michael continues. “We’re basically looking at overhauling most of the systems we use in the office to become more efficient and essentially try to take on more work, take on more turnover with the same amount of staff which we have already started to achieve,” he says. “Our turnover has probably risen by about 50 or so percent and our staff numbers have stayed the same. Once we get those efficiencies in place if there is more work on the table and we are able to grow our numbers organically, then that’s something we’ll be looking at as well.” MARCH 2024

Builds Custom Homes that Reflect Clients’ Lifestyles
MARCH 2024
Reef Coast Constructions is an award-winning custom new home building specialist based in Townsville. With an emphasis on quality and practicality, they build specifically to exacting standards. “After many years in the building industry as a carpenter, my desire to build customized homes that were not just houses, but instead a true representation of the homeowner’s selfexpression and lifestyle became my major goal, says Rob Rule, Owner and General Manager of Reef Coast Constructions. “In the 20 years that Reef Coast Constructions has been operating, we’ve never built the same home twice. Every home is unique,” he says. “You can’t just pick it up out of a box and drop it onsite and say, ‘there’s your custom new home.’” Rob was born and raised in Townsville and in 2005 he and his wife, Nicole, started the company there. Cameron McInnes joined the team in 2017 as Rob’s business partner. Both Rob and Cameron are qualified carpenters and licensed builders and together, they bring more than 50 years combined project management and construction experience to each custom build. Rob says that initially the company operated with a couple of apprentices and progressed from there over the years. “Now we have a staff of four internal and our in-house carpenters. We use local subcontractors for our other trades.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Reef Coast Constructions has made its mark in the industry as a boutique custom designing and building company. They are specialists when it comes to custom home building, and this sets them apart in their niche. “We limit the numbers of builds that we do a year so that we can maintain the service standards that we deliver,” Rob says. “The biggest feedback we get from our clients is that they got the home that they wanted. To us, that’s one of the most important things.” “Because it’s the largest investment they will make, it’s important the journey is more about them than rather than just building a house. They want to be building a home for the benefit of their family and the next stage of their life,” he says. Set Apart as Specialists MARCH 2024
The fact that clients are working directly with the owners at all stages of their project is another important selling point for Reef Coast Constructions. As general manager, Rob says, “I deal with the clients from day one and help guide them through the start of their building journey. Cameron is my construction manager, and he carries out the running of all of the building sites. Our clients are working with the owners at all times, whether it’s in the design phase or the construction phase.” Their more than five decades of experience and the scope of their professional histories is also helps set them apart. “I’ve got a very diverse building background as far as types of projects that I’ve worked on and built in the past,” Rob explains. “Cameron has also worked on a lot of sloping sites, two-story builds as well. I think the knowledge that both of us bring enables us to tackle projects that other builders may be in over their heads with.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Rob explains that the target range for their homes begins around $700,000 and reaches the $2.5 million to $3.5 million mark, but they can go as high as $5 million. He goes on to spotlight one of their recent projects of which they are especially proud. “It’s a two-story sloping site build on the hill at Bushland Beach which is a northern suburb of Townsville. It’s a really nice custom designed, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home that features two living areas, two large decks, two stories on a sloping site, a large double garage, plus additional boat storage bay. “It’s got a really beautiful custom designed kitchen, some really nice feature elements including spotted gum internal stairs, spotted gum decks and a spa on the top deck. It has views of majestic Halifax Bay. It’s a beautiful spot!” Projects and Processes MARCH 2024
He says that this project is unique for Reef Coast Construction because it is a complete custom design and build along with being a sloping site build. “The owner was absolutely over the moon with his home and shared his experiences in a video testimonial posted on our website.” Rob says the way the company operates is very personal and client centric and offers opportunities for the homeowners to participate in each step of the building journey. “We start as strangers, and we finish as friends.” “Part of our process in construction is to actually walk our clients through the home when the frames are up so they can stand in their bedroom, so they can stand in their laundry room, they can stand in their kitchen, and they can see what it feels like to actually be inside their home before it gets all covered in. “Part of our hands-on service is that we have multiple arranged site visits for each client so that they feel like they are part of the building process. One of our service strengths is that our clients do feel like they are involved and not having anything hidden from them.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA

Reef Coast Constructions is a member of the Association of Professional Builders and a 22-year member of the Master Builders Association. The company is recipient of the MBA’s 2018 and 2021 award for quality workmanship and the 2021 recipient of the best residential bathroom honor. Two of their current carpenters are recipients of the MBA’s regional apprentice award. Brodyee ?? received the award in 2021 and Luke ?? is the 2023 honoree. Luke also won the state apprentice award in 2023. “We offer our carpentry staff a lot of knowledge, training, and mentoring. We’re not giving you a carpentry apprenticeship; we’re giving you a building apprenticeship. They’re learning how to become builders, not just carpenters. Because that’s the ultimate goal for a lot of them, to become builders themselves.” Memberships and Awards THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
Rob says that green initiatives start at the design phase. “In our design process, we take into careful consideration the orientation, capturing of natural breezes, and where the sun comes up, where the sun goes down because Townsville is in the topics of Queensland. It’s hot out here! “One of the key things that’s important in custom designing is making sure you’re considering those natural factors and the impact of that on every individual design because if you get it wrong, you’re just building your client an oven, but if you get it right, you’ve got a home that is passively cooling itself which is far more comfortable to live in and far more energy efficient because you’re not running air conditioning constantly.” Sustainability and Green Initiatives MARCH 2024

“Moving forward I would like to see continuous growth in a sustainable fashion so that we can maintain control, provide great service, build beautiful homes and have happy clients and happy staff,” Rob says. “I want to see Reef Coast Constructions continually grow at a controlled rate so that we can maintain the standards that we’ve got now or even improve those further.” He explains that while they will continue to be open to building homes in the $600,000 to $700,000 range, they are wanting to move into higher end home constructions. “We are looking at working more in those multi-million-dollar home categories.” As far as staff, he wants to see more development of the carpentry team. Tied to that is the goal of increasing revenue while increasing profits. “That way we can be rewarding those who work for us along the way as well and they can feel like they are part of something larger than themselves.” “All in all, we just want to sustainably grow and continue to build beautiful homes for people and to see the enjoyment that the clients get and to have that feeling of accomplishment that we are able to offer buildings that others can’t. “Building homes in general is one of the last frontiers of handmade products. Although there’s a lot of manufactured products that go into it, it’s people and their hands that actually bring them together.” The Future MARCH 2024

Delivering on a promise
Lion One Metals is a Canadian resource company that trades internationally under listings in Canada, the USA, and Australia. Currently, they are focused on advancing their 100-percent-owned, high-grade, fullypermitted Tuvatu Alkaline Gold Project in Fiji. After completing construction of their Tuvatu mine ahead of schedule in September of last year, they had their first gold pour in October. The company’s mine development division is excited to continue development of their mining and processing operations there, while the exploration division – now equipped with seven drill rigs and a new assay laboratory – is focused on expanding their resource and making further discoveries in the surrounding region. Lion One Metals has been operating in Fiji since 2006, when the company acquired the Vatukoula Gold Mine – which has been operating on the island since the 1930s, making it one the oldest and most prolific gold mines in the South Pacific. As part of that acquisition, Lion One also acquired the Tuvatu mine. The company later sold the Vatukoula mine to another company, but as part of the transaction they retained the Tuvatu mine. At the time, Tuvatu was “sitting idle and undeveloped,” according to Patrick Hickey, Chief Operating Officer, but the company saw a lot of promise there. Patrick, for his part, is a veteran mine builder with over 40 years of experience as an engineer and executive in the design and construction of world class mining, petroleum, and power generating operations throughout the world. He has worked for some of the world’s leading operators, including Mobil in the USA and in the Middle East, Power in the Czech Republic, BHP Oil Refining in Hawaii, Kinross Gold Corp. in Africa and Spain, and Newmont Gold in Indonesia and Peru. He joined Lion One Metals in June 2021. He was brought on to help bring Tuvatu from MARCH 2024 Lion One Metals CEO Walter Berukoff and the Honourable Maciu Nalusima, Acting Minister for Mineral Resources for Fiji, at the First Gold Pour Ceremony at Tuvatu.

“exploration into operations” – which is exactly what he’s done. As previously mentioned, construction of the Tuvatu mine was completed ahead of schedule, with mill construction beginning in August 2022 and commissioning beginning in September 2023. Lion One poured their first gold at Tuvatu on Fiji Day, October 10th 2023. The ceremonial first pour was conducted on site with over 1000 members of local communities, businesses, employees, and government officials in attendance. At the time, Walter Berukoff, Lion One Chairman and CEO, commented: “The first gold pour at Tuvatu is a landmark event in the history of our company. We have successfully transitioned from explorer to producer and have delivered on our promise to build the South Pacific’s newest gold mine in the heart of Fiji.” Walter also congratulated the entire Lion One team – along with their partners in the local community – for achieving that significant milestone: “We thank our employees, contractors, local landowners and community members for their hard work and dedication. Completing construction ahead of schedule is a testament to the strength of their efforts and to the resilience of the Fijian spirit. We also thank our loyal shareholders for their continued support. This marks the beginning of our next phase of growth as we look forward to ramping up to commercial production at Tuvatu and to advancing our many other topquality prospects throughout the Navilawa Caldera.” Again, construction and commissioning of the Tuvatu Alkaline Gold Project was MARCH 2024 Lion One Metals COO Patrick Hickey shaking hands with Nasalo, a local landowner and member of the Navilawa community.

Achieving that pace is a point of pride for the team at Lion One Metals. “That was a huge achievement and a testament to all the planning and hard work that was done,” says Ronan Geoghegan, Corporate Development Manager. “It’s a testament to the relationships we formed with the local community and the Fiji government. Those relationships were hugely important and we’re really proud of them.” In preparing for the Tuvatu project, Lion One Metals also constructed their own geochemical assay and metallurgical laboratory building. That laboratory is located at the company’s Fijian headquarters, approximately one kilometre from the Nadi International Airport and only 17 kilometres away from the Tuvatu mine. The lab is equipped for gold analysis by fire assay with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) finish, and can also be utilized to conduct metallurgical optimization test work including flotation and leaching. Backed by that laboratory and their fleet of eight drill rigs, Lion One Metals is “effectively a vertically-integrated organization,” according to Ronan. “That’s very unique, especially for a company of our size – especially an exploration company, as we were for so long,” he says. “We can now get results from our drills very quickly. That allows us to be really nimble and really responsive. It allows us to move THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
really quickly.” “If we drill a hole and we see there’s gold, we can send it for testing and get the results potentially while the drill is still drilling,” he adds. “Then we can adapt and design another drill hole based on those results. Typically, companies like ours would have to wait potentially months to get drill results back, because there are only so many labs that are available and they are usually pretty busy. We typically get our results within a week – and if we have a really important sample, we can get it back within a couple days.” Returning to the topic of vertical integration, Patrick points out that in conjunction with the development of the mine, Lion One has also developed a gold processing plant, all the necessary supporting infrastructure, and a state-ofthe-art tailings storage facility, which is located 3.5 kilometres away from the Tuvatu mine site. Once gold-bearing material is extracted from the Tuvatu mine, it is sent to the processing plant to produce gold. This process starts with a two-stage crushing circuit, which consists of a primary jaw crusher, a secondary cone crusher, and a system of three conveyor belts that transport the material between the two crushers and on to the processing plant. Material from the crushing circuit is then fed into an integrated two-stage gravity concentration circuit, after which some concentrates are treated by an intensive cyanide leaching reactor while the remainder are leached using conventional cyanide Carbon in Leach (CIL) technology. Gold is recovered from the gold laden carbon using conventional adsorption desorption recovery (ADR) technology and smelted on site to produce gold doré MARCH 2024 Lion One Metals’ first gold pour, Fiji Day October 10th, 2023.
bars. From there, the leached tailings are treated using an SO2/air process to remove any residual cyanide and are filtered to reduce their moisture content. The filtered tailings are then transported to the company’s tailings storage facility. The professionalism and efficiency of the whole operation is another point of pride for the Lion One Metals team. “Lion One has always had the attitude that we’re going to build a world-class operation with world-class facilities, and that’s what we have done,” Patrick says.
