undertaking. “They sold a portion of their venue in the middle of the city – the Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre – for redevelopment recently,” he explains. “This meant they lost access to their basement car park. As part of a greater redevelopment of the back of house of the club we had to develop a new access ramp underneath the back of the club to access the car park. It was a challenging job. It involved holding up a large portion of the building while we built a tunnel underneath it.” Throughout their history, Milleen Group has also been very active in their community – they have always felt they have a responsibility to give back and they do that in a big way. For example, they currently sponsor the Hunter Mountain Bike Association (HMBA), which races at the Awaba Mountain Bike Park. The club has in its ranks state and national title holders, world champions, qualified MTBA commissaires and coaches. They also support multiple cancer research charities, including the Movember movement, which raises awareness for male mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer, as well as the Great Cycle Challenge Australia, an October cycling challenge to raise funds to end childhood cancer. In the past they have supported the Mark Hughes Foundation’s Australia Top End Triathlon, raising funds for brain cancer research. Looking forward, Andrew is excited about the work Milleen is doing now on a large project in Newcastle on part of the old BHP Steelworks site.
