Fresh out of school, Leigh trained as a mechanic, only to realize that life spent elbow-deep in engines wasn’t his true calling. When his father offered him an on-the-job apprenticeship at Vergola— his company, which manufactured Australia’s first complete opening closing louvre roof system—Leigh jumped at the chance. He began by sweeping floors, running errands and loading trucks—tasks that taught him the value of hard work and humility—before mastering the factory machinery, earning his truck-driving licence and eventually joining the sales team. Though he once dreamed of inheriting his dad’s company, Leigh and Nathan eventually set their sights on following in his footsteps in a different way and starting something of their own. In 2009, armed with practical skills, an entrepreneurial spark and a desire to carve their own legacy, Leigh and Nathan founded Safetyline Jalousie in a small factory in Terry Hills, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
