to learn, treat others well, and actually enjoy what they do.” That philosophy has led to a shift in Richie’s hiring approach. Initially, he aimed to recruit the most skilled carpenters he could find. But over time, he realised that starting with the right attitude was more valuable. “I began hiring younger guys with great character and training them up. They’ve become fantastic carpenters and even better people. That’s when I knew my approach had to change.” This focus on people extends to mentoring. Richie is happy to see members of his team upskill, and if they decide to eventually start their own business, he’s willing to help them do it. “Seeing them grow into their own careers is really rewarding. If they want to follow a similar path to mine, I’ll support that.” After stepping away from direct site supervision in 2024 with the hiring of a dedicated supervisor, Richie now spends more time in the office focusing on business growth, project selection, and client relationships. But even as the company scales, he’s committed to keeping things manageable. “I don’t want to take on 20 more jobs overnight. I’d rather do it steadily, take on the right projects, put on the right people, and grow in a way that’s sustainable.” Project selection is a deliberate process. Buena Vista seeks work that is unique in some way— projects that offer something special, whether it’s cutting-edge modern architecture, classic elegance, or even the occasional heritage build. The goal is to keep things interesting and inspiring, for both the team and the client. “There’s got to be that wow factor,” Richie says. “When we finish a job, I want to look at it and feel proud that we created something remarkable.” At the heart of it all, Buena Vista Homes remains driven by the belief that building is not just about structures—it’s about creating spaces where families can thrive. For Richie, his own experience of raising three young children has deepened that conviction. “The most important thing in life isn’t the home itself or the high-end finishes—it’s what happens inside. It’s the people, the memories, the moments.” That perspective shapes every decision the company makes, from the first client meeting to the final handover. AUGUST 2025
