we’ve done heartbreak and supported each other through all of that.” Matt had a renovation business before he decided to go into home building and his carpenters have been with the company for 15 or 16 years. Damien Sherry, the on-site manager, has proudly been part of the Horizon Projects team for 10 years, working his way up before also becoming a director in 2023. “It’s very inspiring for the growth of the company for an employee to want to buy into the business and can see where it’s moving forward,” says Kylie. “We have apprentices who are aspiring to be an on-site foreman. As long as they have that hunger for that growth, I think we’re well and truly on the right track.” Family is at the core of everything in Horizon Projects Mackay. “Matt’s sons are keen to step into the business side as well, following dad’s footsteps and becoming carpenters which is humbling and pretty special,” says Kylie. Damien’s wife Erin is the company’s socials and marketing coordinator. Matt’s wife Kacey is the office manager and colour consultant. Kylie is not only their sales consultant but is also Matt’s sister-in-law. The sense of belonging extends to their contractors too. “A lot of our contractors have been with us for eight-plus years since before the COVID downturn. That comes back to that family culture in Horizon. They get the family treatment the same as our employees,” says Kylie. Horizon Projects Mackay is committed to supporting the local community, including grassroots sports.
