from clients that says our finishes are impeccable,” says Kylie. “There are things that we do that Matt won’t negotiate on. Our standard ceiling height is 2.7 meters while the industry standard is 2.4 meters. There was a while when the market was quite tough, and we looked at bringing that down to 2.4 to see what the costings were like. We thought it might help get us into the first home buyers’ market more, but that’s not something Matt was willing to negotiate. He feels that while the 2.7 ceilings are luxury, they are not that much more costly.” They choose to install high-quality appliances and air conditioners in their homes because it’s something that will work,” she says. Horizon Projects Mackay has begun integrating solar into all new homes, but only after a thorough research period. ‘Matt carefully considered who to partner with, and we’ve chosen a top-tier company,’ says Kylie. ‘Most builders install a 6kW system to meet energy efficiency minimums, but we go a step further with 6.6kW panels and a 10kW inverter. This means if clients want to expand their solar setup in the future, they won’t need to upgrade their inverter. This level of quality comes at a price, but buying in bulk, supporting local companies, and being loyal to their suppliers and contractors helps offset costs, says Kylie. “Our suppliers look after us. We go to the same suppliers for every house we build. Ideally, we aim to build 26 homes a year, creating consistent and reliable ongoing work for suppliers across the region.” Continuing to build quality homes in the Mackay region to their current high standard is the goal for Horizon Homes Mackay’s future. “We won’t overcommit ourselves and underdeliver on a project,” says Kylie. “It doesn’t matter if you’re building a $500,000 home or a $3.7 million home, the finishes you get on those homes are the same when it comes down to the basics. It doesn’t matter what you spend with us. As long as we deliver that quality, I think we’ll have a bright future in the Mackay region. We can do anything and everything in the Mackay space, including commercial projects.” FEBRUARY 2025
