“We have a practical approach to design,” he says. “We don’t design things that just look good but also have a sensible way of constructing that is within the client’s budget. We have a good handle on construction costs and construction in general, so we factor that into our designs to make sure we’re designing realistic projects that are going to get built.” SBD Studio has grown from a one-person operation to having five full-time staff. Their senior designer has 10-plus years of experience in residential design and construction. Another lead designer has a master’s in architecture. The team is rounded out with an interior designer who creates amazing spaces that tie the whole building together and a building designer who assists with drafting and simpler design projects. Regarding contractors, Jake says he has a lot of friends in the industry and knows a lot of different trades. “I’m not shy about asking questions. We lean on them and ask for advice. Pick their brains so our designs don’t cause problems when the contractors get on site.” The fact that they have been able to comfortably have these conversations with contractors has led to a level of trust and helped the relationship between designer and contractor over the years. SBD Studio’s hard work was recognized in 2024 when they received the Building Designers Association of Australia national award for ‘Residential Alterations/Additions over $1 million.’ This was the studio’s first submission, said Jake.
