that lack of responsibility to see it through from start to finish that things get misinterpreted, and the client doesn’t realize it until the house is built. We do the design, selection and specifications together and I’m on site during the build. There’s no middleman. If there’s an issue, we can go over the notes and say we never had that discussion, but if it is a mistake we can make it right.” According to Jerome, another issue that clients typically have when dealing with contractors is a lack of communication throughout the build. “The client can only talk to an administration person who can’t tell them anything about their build without talking to a supervisor. It’s that chain of communication where maybe the supervisor is too busy, maybe there’s too many projects going on at once and the client doesn’t get regular updates. Every day I am on site and give photos and updates through dedicated What’s App groups. It’s like talking to a friend. It’s so much more collaborative and more like a partnership where they’re part of that build.” In creating his own company, Jerome adopted the policies and procedures he believed worked well at his previous companies, and he amended and improved the policies and procedures he believed weren’t quite as effective. The system that resulted gives him a work/life balance that is much more enjoyable. “Working the way I do, it does mean I can only take on three-to-four houses at any one point in time – but that’s good. That provides a great work/life balance for me, and it enabled me to give a high level of service to those clients,” he says. MARCH 2025
