Founded in 2017 and based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, SBD Studio is a residential architecture and interior design practice working primarily across the east coast of New South Wales. Led by founder and director Jake French, the studio focuses on crafting long-term family homes, renovation projects and high-end duplex developments, operating across Sydney’s eastern suburbs, northern beaches, and into the Illawarra and Wollongong regions. Jake’s pathway into architecture began well before formal study. Growing up around building sites alongside his father and grandfather, both with strong ties to the building industry, he developed an early understanding of how buildings come together in practice. “Being around construction from such a young age shaped how I think about design,” he explains. “It grounded everything in what is actually buildable, not just what looks good on paper.” That foundation led him through drafting studies, a diploma at TAFE, and a Bachelor of Architecture at UNSW, alongside continuous employment within architectural practices from his first year of university in 2012. Over the course of nearly a decade, Jake worked across several Sydney-based firms, gaining experience in high-end residential projects as well as commercial developments, including hospitality, education, and healthcare facilities. While that breadth of experience proved valuable, residential architecture stood apart for him personally. “Working on homes is different,” he says. “You are designing spaces that people will live in every day, so success is measured in how the home functions, not just how it photographs.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE AUSTRALIA
