Completed earlier this year, Project Northcote is a clear example of SBD Studio’s design and coordination approach in practice. Designed from 2023, the project involved two homes on a single lot for a returning client. Rather than producing mirrored dwellings, the studio developed two distinct architectural responses, one expressed as a darker, contemporary residence and the other as a lighter, Mediterranean-inspired home. “The goal was to give each home its own identity,” Jake explains. “They share the same site, but they do not need to feel the same.” A southfacing backyard presented one of the project’s primary challenges, requiring careful consideration of how natural light would reach the main living areas. “Bringing light into the kitchen, living, and dining spaces became central to the design,” he says.
