arranged floor plan, light is drawn into spaces that would otherwise feel constrained. While the external forms establish a strong street presence, Jake explains that the success of the project lies in the internal experience. “How the spaces feel once people are living there is what really matters,” he notes. As a result of their work on projects of that caliber, SBD Studio has been able to earn growing recognition within the industry. Over the past two years, the practice has earned three national design awards through the Building Designers Association of Australia. In addition, several projects designed by the studio and constructed by partner builders have received awards or finalist recognition through organisations including HIA and MBA. “Awards are never the goal,” Jake explains. “But they are a nice acknowledgement of the work the whole team puts in.” Looking ahead, the studio’s focus remains on refinement rather than award-seeking or expansion. “We want to keep improving the quality of our work year after year,” Jake explains. While opportunities in rural or alpine locations remain of interest when the right project arises, SBD Studio is committed to operating at a scale that supports both its team and its clients. Through careful growth, strong partnerships, and a design process grounded in collaboration and clarity, SBD Studio continues to deliver residential architecture that balances technical rigour with considered, client-focused design.
