Hardy Fencing, based in Alice Springs, is a locally and Indigenous-owned fence contracting and hire business. Since forming in the late 1980s, they have greatly expanded their operations and footprint, and have earned a wealth of experience supplying and fitting all styles of fencing. These days, they are well known throughout the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia for their depth of capabilities and industry expertise – which now includes not just fence supply and installation, but also fence hire and construction works. “Our goal is to cater to our clients’ needs,” says Sydney Maloney, director of the company. “Over the years, we’ve expanded our fleet of plant and equipment in order to better meet those needs, and now the flexibility of our business is a big part of what sets us apart.” Sydney has been involved in the fencing industry almost all his life. Back in the 1960s, his father was a rural contractor that did fencing for cattle stations, and he started working with his dad when he was 10 years old. In the 1970s, he joined his dad full-time, and in the 1980s he ended up taking over the family business. He first started working with Hardy Fencing as a subcontractor, doing a lot of their large-scale remote jobs. The owner at the time was looking to move to Tasmania, so Sydney approached him about buying the business. They came to an agreement and Sydney took over in January 2020. The timing, Sydney admits, wasn’t the greatest – two weeks after taking over, the COVID pandemic hit, and the company was temporarily disallowed from travelling into the bush, where many of their contracts took place.
