around $30,000. One of Neil’s largest projects to date reached $1.5 million, and involved a complete remodel of a large home, including a second-floor addition, pools, and other premium finishes. Another ongoing project is valued at $1.2 million, with several more recent projects in the $500,000 range. One recent renovation particularly showcased Smith & Sons’ focus on collaboration and client engagement. Featured on Channel 9Life’s ‘Dream Homes Revealed’, the project—valued at approximately $600,000—transformed an older home with imported fixtures, wainscoting, and other high-end finishes. On that project, they worked extremely closely with the client, which is their preference: “It’s rewarding when a client is involved and willing to put in the work. It makes a huge difference in the outcome, especially when sourcing premium products and making detailed design decisions.” Running a successful Smith & Sons branch requires more than technical skill—it demands leadership, effective team management, and strong client relationships. Neil’s team consists of eight to ten employees, including family members in key roles. His sister oversees administration, bookkeeping, and invoicing, while his brother-inlaw manages estimating. Neil’s son, currently a carpenter, is being prepared for future leadership. “Having family involved has freed me up to focus on project management and client relationships,” Neil says. “It makes a huge difference in a small business.” Neil describes his role as primarily project management and business oversight rather than OCTOBER 2025
