“It’s above and beyond what anyone has ever done before,” Mark says. “That would be our most prized job at the moment.” Sydney adds that the relationship forged on that project have already led to further opportunities. “Working with that mob at Docker River has led to another job they gave us here in town in Alice Springs,” he says. “They like what we’re doing, so they gave us another big contract. One thing just leads to another.” In addition to Docker River, the company’s dedicated remote Indigenous crew have also recently completed significant fencing work in the Pitjantjatjara lands in northern South Australia – including fencing around local cemeteries and securing airstrips against feral stock. In communities where a well-fenced airstrip can be a matter of safety, that work carries real meaning. Hardy Fencing makes a point of engaging local community members at every remote job site, inviting them to work alongside their crews and gain hands-on experience. “We connect with the local agencies and ask the locals if they want to join in and work with us,” Sydney says. “Seeing locals involved in putting up a fence with us, connecting with our workers – maybe they look forward to getting their own job some time down the track. We give them that opportunity. That’s a satisfying part of the job for us.” Moving forward, Hardy Fencing’s vision is to continue that community engagement.
